NFL Rumors: Insider predicts great news for Raiders on free agency front
The Raiders are hosting free agent cornerback Marcus Peters on Monday. One insider predicts Las Vegas will be getting good news from that visit.
The Raiders offense got some much needed good news on Sunday as Jimmy Garoppolo passed his physical and looks fit to take on the starting quarterback job in Las Vegas. The Josh Jacobs situation may be unresolved, but certainty at quarterback is a definite plus.
The defense may get some good news of their own this week, if Raiders insider Vincent Bonsignore is right.
Vegas is hosting cornerback Marcus Peters on Monday, according to Ian Rapoport. He had earlier visited the team earlier this year without an agreement to sign on. Bonsignore has a telling answer to a question on Twitter about whether the two-time All-Pro would leave the facility as a Raider this time.
“Your best guess- Is Peters a Raider tomorrow?” was the question.
The answer from Bonsignore: “Or very soon after.”
NFL Rumors: Raiders look likely to sign Marcus Peters
It just so happens that Garoppolo’s contract could help the Raiders in their question to sign Peters.
As Bonsignore pointed out, Vegas can “reverse engineer the structure of Jimmy G’s contract.”
When Garoppolo has issues with his physical initially, the team restructured the terms of his contract, converting his signing bonus into salary so that all the money would hinge on his passing the physical down the line.
Now that that’s done, the team can shift some of that money back into a signing bonus, which would create the cap space necessary to sign free agents like Peters.
So Monday should be an interesting day for the Raiders. News that Garoppolo’s contract has been reworked likely heralds a signing. And Peters is the big fish currently on the line.
