Surely, Cubs outfielder Ian Happ would wish no ill will on former teammate Willson Contreras, who now plays for the rival Cardinals. Someone should tell Miles Mikolas that.

Mikolas was ejected just a few pitches after Happ’s backswing unfortunately hit Contreras in the head. Happ, who was Contreras’ teammate for years in Chicago, looked remorseful that his bat went wild, thus striking Willson unexpectedly.

Yet, the veteran pitcher didn’t see it that way. Mikolas took retribution into his own hands, plunking Happ and getting thrown out of the game as a result.

On the Cards broadcast of the event, Chip Caray and the play-by-play staff considering Mikolas form of violence — an ancient act in today’s game, to be frank — “doing it the right way.”

What Cubs, Cardinals said about Willson Contreras incident

After the game, Mikolas doubled down, saying he has his catcher’s back. Yet, was this really about that? If Happ meant no harm for a simple mistake, then Mikolas surely overreacted.

“In any circumstance, I’ve got Willson’s back; he’s my catcher, and I consider him a really good friend now,” said Mikolas. “Any single one of these guys in this locker room, I go to bat for them 100 percent. That’s something we as a team believe in, always having each other’s backs. I guess that’s what the umpires thought I was doing [purposefully hitting Happ], and it’s unfortunate there was no warning or anything.”

Oli Marmol, who was also ejected, felt Mikolas should have been issued a warning instead.

As for the Cubs, Happ was worried about his former teammate postgame, and reiterated that his backswing striking his former teammate was an accident.

“We played together for six years, we’re good friends and have a lot of love for him, so to see him go down and be bleeding from the head, it’s obviously a scary moment,” said Happ. “We texted a little bit after the game, and he’s doing all right. So it was just a scary moment.”
