Both Brazil and Jamacia aim to qualify for the Round of 16 of the Women’s World Cup when they play on Wednesday, August 2, 2023 in Melbourne, Australia at the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium.

With their first Women’s World Cup win in history now in the back pocket of the Reggae Girlz, they transition to a crucial showdown against Pia Sundhage’s Brazil.

In just its second World Cup, Jamacia advances with a win or draw against the South American side while the Brazilians move on with a victory or if it draws against the Jamaicans, Panama must defeat France. The goal differential has to be in favor of the yellow and green over France if that second result were to happen.

The CONMEBOL powerhouse has made it at least into the knockout stages in the last six World Cups while the Reggae Girlz will become the first nation that is not the United States or Canada in CONCACAF to earn a place in the last 16 of this world tournament.

These two sides met previous in the group stage of the last World Cup in France where Brazilian legend Cristiane netted a hat trick in a comfortable 3-0 for the South American favorites. It will not be a walk in the park quite like it was last time around.

Defensively, Lorne Donaldson’s team has been extraordinary, picking up a clean sheet in the first two contests including its match against France. Jamacia will have its top goal-scorer back into the lineup, Manchester City star Khadija Shaw after she missed the Panama game due to the fact she received a red card in stoppage time of the Group F opener.

It is going to be about how Brazil can be creative in the final third, like it was against the other CONCACAF side in this group. The Reggae Girlz essentially only need a draw with the French more than likely going to take down the Canal Girls. Drew Spence’s toughness was vital in both results for her side, and if Jamacia is going to finish this job, she is going to be at the center of it.

10 years ago, it would be considered insane to say the women of a small country in Central America have a chance to eliminate a football juggernaut. That is the new reality that we live in.
