Colombia’s high-flying women’s national team aims to secure a place in the knockout stages of the Women’s World Cup with a victory or draw against African outfit Morocco on August 3, 2023 in Perth, Australia.

After one of the most remarkable victories in the history of the Women’s World Cup, Colombia is on the brink of the knockout stage. Star youngster Linda Caicedo, and Real Sociedad defender Manuela Vanegas scored a goal apiece against Germany to lift the South American outfit to a shocker at the Sydney Football Stadium.

Reynald Pedros’ Morocco recently won its first-ever World Cup contest against No. 17-ranked South Korea. Forward Ibtissam Jraïdi netted a header in the 6′ for the Lionesses of Atlas to keep the potential of progression in this tournament a possibility.

The CONMEBOL side need to win or draw to top Group H, but if it loses, Nelson Abadía’s team need Germany to either lose or draw against the South Koreans to advance. For the African outfit, it has a much more difficult path to make history. The Moroccans need three points, and Colin Bell’s South Korea to take down the 2022 Euro’s runners-up. That may not even do it. Pedros’ team must possess a superior goal differential than the two nations in front of it heading into the match.

The last time Colombia qualified for the World Cup, it reached the Round of 16, finishing third in a group that featured France and England. With four goals in the first two matches, the Colombians have already matched the number of goals from their previous two appearances combined. The Lionesses of Atlas could join Nigeria, and Cameroon as the only countries from the Confederation of African Football to make it past the group stage of this world competition.

Caicedo is the 18-year-old that has taken the tournament by storm, scoring a brilliant goal to open up the scoring against the Germans in the second group stage match. The African side is going to rely on captain Ghizlane Chebbak to provide that creativity and prowess in front of the goal.

This will be the first-ever meeting between these two sides. The South American side is unbeaten in its three contests against African teams, taking down Zambia twice, and Nigeria. All of these have occurred in the last year, and were decided by one-goal score lines.
