Watch South Korea vs. Germany live stream Women’s World Cup 2023 group stage on Aug. 3
The Euro 2022 runners-up Germany seek to progress past the group stages of the Women’s World Cup against Asian side South Korea in Milton, Australia on Aug. 3.
Coming off a stunning defeat at the hands of No. 25 ranked Colombia, Martina Voss-Tecklenburg and the German national team turn the page to the final group stage match against winless South Korea.
Despite an Alexandra Popp penalty late in the second half, Germany was unable to hang on to a result against the South American outfit, conceding a header off of a set-piece in stoppage time. The German’s last opponent in Group H sits shockingly at the bottom. It will be the third time in four qualifications that South Korea failed to win a single contest if the European side takes care of business.
For the two-time World Cup winners, the task is straightforward. Win, and it is almost a guarantee that knockout-stage football is in their future. Due to the fact that Morocco’s goal differential is far too deep a hole for it to overcome, even if the Colombians were to fall short in their match, it would not affect Voss-Tecklenburg’s team all that much.
This will be the first-ever meeting between these two nations in women’s football. The Tigresses of Asia have won just one of their last six contests against European sides, losing to three in the 2023 Arnold Clark Cup back in February. The last time the Germans were defeated by an Asian outfit was in 2011 in the quarterfinals when a 108′ goal by Japan’s Karina Maruyama knocked out the tournament’s host nation.
Wolfsburg’s Popp leads the DFB Women with three goals through two matches. The star striker is supported by defender Svenja Huth along with Jule Brand, and Klara Bühl in the final third. The South Koreans have yet to score in the World Cup, and if that changes former Chelsea midfielder Ji So-yun will be at the center of the creation. Nobody on the team has more passes into the final third of the pitch than Ji through 180 minutes of football.
Colin Bell’s team is going to have to find a way to both push numbers forward with the fact that it needs three points while staying organized in the back. That is easier said than done, considering the quality of the opposition, and South Korea’s record of not holding a single clean sheet in a World Cup game.
