The third Round of 16 match will feature European super squad the Netherlands taking on the joyous and determined South African national team, who look to continue to make history by qualifying for the next round.

After finishing at the top of Group E of the 2023 Women’s World Cup, the Netherlands will take on the second-place team from Group G, South Africa. The Dutch are fresh off an impressive performance against Vietnam, where they came away with a 7-0 victory, the highest scoreline of the tournament so far. They dominated in possession, continuing to show the same quality we’ve come to expect from this Netherlands side that forced the United States to hold onto a draw in the second group stage game.

South Africa finished second in their group, knocking out Italy in their final game with a late minute game-winner. This will be South Africa’s first time in the round of sixteen, and they worked for it. This team has shown incredible grit and determination, sticking it out in tough moments and carrying on to make it to the next round.

After tying Argentina and falling to Sweden, their match against Italy was a must-win, and win they did. One of the most joyful teams of this tournament, South Africa will look to continue to make history against the Dutch on Saturday.

This has been a tournament of surprises and upsets, it would be naïve to assume that will be left behind in the group stage. At this point, the FIFA rankings are just numbers, and each time is as good as their performance on the pitch. With major teams like Germany and Brazil falling in the group stage, every game is an opportunity.

The Dutch will be looking to free midfielder Jill Roord, who scored two of their seven goals against Vietnam, and their single goal against the United States. South African superstar Hildah Magaia has two goals and one assist for her country and is determined to earn more in this upcoming matchup.
