A tale as old as time, the United States will take on Sweden in their first knockout game where they must win to continue on.
The match-up we’ve all been waiting for is almost here. As USWNT captain Lindsey Horan pointed out, “it wouldn’t be a major tournament if we didn’t play Sweden.” The long-time rivals are set to clash on Sunday in Melbourne.
The United States are looking to redeem themselves after a disappointing matchup against Portugal, in which they failed to score and walked away with a 0-0 draw. As a result, they finished second in Group E, setting them up to play the winners of Group G, the Swedish. The Swedes have yet to lose or tie in this tournament, making them just one of three teams to win all three of their group-stage games. Ranked third in the world, Sweden will want to start out on the front foot against the United States, looking to force the States to make an early exit at this year’s Women’s World Cup.
They might have a good chance at doing just that considering the United States’ poor performances so far. But there’s still no need to panic if you’re a USWNT fan. The team is well known for bouncing back and working under pressure, and they will want to make this game a statement match. With a fire under them, the United States has the opportunity to come out strong against Sweden and turn around the current narrative surrounding them in this tournament. Of course, that will all depend on the players and the tactics from head coach Vlatko Andonovski.
One of the teams having an incredible tournament, Sweden is an aggressive side with a very structured game plan. With one of the best backlines in the tournament, they’ve allowed just one goal in all three group-stage games, with . Not to mention their success in the attack, they’re tied for the second most goals in the tournament with nine total. Dangerous on set pieces and in the air, Sweden will put the United States’ young backline to the test as they draw fouls and push into the penalty area.
