Justin Thomas entered the Wyndham Championship fighting for a spot in the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Did the American star make it into the postseason?

We normally wouldn’t see Justin Thomas heading to Sedgefield Country Club for the Wyndham Championship, the last event of the PGA Tour season, but this hasn’t been a normal run for JT this year.

With the 2022 PGA Champion struggling, he entered the final week of the regular season at No. 79 in the FedEx Cup standings, putting him danger of missing out on the FedEx Cup Playoffs with the new rules stating that only the Top 70 will make it into the postseason. Roughly speaking and without the factors of other players potentially jumping up in the standings, JT needed to finish about inside the Top 15 to make the playoffs.

Thomas didn’t get off to the start that he needed, shooting an even-par 70 in his first round and looking in danger of missing yet another cut. But he bounced back on Friday with a 5-under round of 65 to put himself into the weekend. He followed that up with a 4-under 66 on Saturday. He wasn’t in contention to win coming into the final round, but the FedEx Cup Playoffs seemed in reach.

Essentially, with another good and well under-par round, he could crack the Top 70, as Data Golf showed with their probabilities for Thomas in Sunday’s final round based on what he shot.

That begs the question, though. Did Justin Thomas do enough to make the FedEx Cup Playoffs?

Did Justin Thomas make the FedEx Cup Playoffs?

Update: Justin Thomas did not make the FedEx Cup Playoffs. With Glover’s win, he finished just on the wrong side of the Top 70 at 71st.

Original Post: Justin Thomas finished his round in dramatic fashion, nearly holing out for a needed birdie on the 18th hole, but settling for par to finish with a 2-under round of 68. That left him projected at 71st in the standings.

Thomas was definitely clawing his way through the final round early, getting just one birdie and grinding out eight other pars on the front-nine. That continued for the first five holes in the second-nine, but he broke through with a big-time 15-footer that he sunk for eagle on the Par-5 15th hole. He gave one stroke right back, though, with a bad tee shot on the Par-3 16th hole that led to an untimely bogey but kept him at No. 70. He then dropped back with someone jumping him again.

According to the CBS broadcast, though, Thomas can still get in if Russell Henley wins and Lucas Glover does not, which would push JT into the field.

We’ll keep you updated with how this plays out but, as of now, Justin Thomas has done just enough to get into the playoffs.
