The winners of Group F, France will not get Germany in the Women’s World Cup knockout round, instead it is Morocco for a chance at a quarterfinal berth on Aug. 8 in Hindmarsh, Australia.

Heading into the final match day of Group H, there was little hope for the Moroccans who needed to beat the current group leaders and have Germany lose or draw against South Korea. Sometimes the ball just bounces your way. That is exactly what happened in the case of the Lionesses of Atlas.

From a 6-0 defeat to the two-time world champions to begin the tournament to being the team that finished above it two matches later. Reynald Pedros’ team is going to be one of the most unforgettable in the history of this competition. It is led by No. 7 Ghizlane Chebbak, the captain who led the side in goals during the African Cup of Nations.

Morocco became just the second African nation in its debut Women’s World Cup to make it out of the group stage in addition to Cameroon. The goal will be defend, defend, defend, with the hope of breaking out on the counter. Similar to the USWNT match, the longer this game stays 0-0, the more questions that are going to enter the minds of the French. Going up against a European power like the French makes it difficult to believe this “Moroccan magic” can last much longer. Either way, it has been an incredible last 12 months for the country of Morocco and its football teams.

Les Bleues have reached the knockout stage of the Women’s World Cup for the fourth time with the goal of continuing their unbeaten streak in Round of 16 contests. Considering the opponent and players like Kadidiatou Diani donning the French kit, this is France’s match to lose. Six players on Hervé Renard’s team have scored at least one goal so far. Diani will be the player getting recognized for the finishing, but Grace Geyoro has been the definition of consistent in the midfield for the European side. The key is going to be scoring quickly, but in the last seven knockout games, Les Bleues have only found the back of the net in the first 45 minutes once.

Expect the unexpected in this competition. Though the European outfit ranks No. 5 in the FIFA rankings, it is just 90 minutes of football. Anything can happen, especially in a World Cup that has demonstrated the fact that the gap in women’s football is no longer as larger as it was.
