Watch Spain vs. Netherlands live stream Women’s World Cup 2023 quarterfinals on Aug. 10
For the first time in its country’s history, Spain are into the Women’s World Cup quarterfinals as it takes on 2019 finalist Netherlands at Wellington Regional Stadium on August 10.
This may be considered unchartered territory for the Spanish, but considering the kind of performances they have put in this summer, it sure does not feel like it. Even with numerous world-class talents boycotting selection into the team, Jorge Vilda has led Spain to the last eight by way of outscoring its opposition 13-5 through four games at the Women’s World Cup.
With three goals and two assists, Barcelona’s Aitana Bonmatí has been at the center of almost everything La Roja has done offensively. Irene Paredes, and all-time leading goal-scorer Jennifer Hermoso act as the veteran leaders within this team.
There were a lot of questions coming out following the drubbing Japan put on them in the group stage finale. The Spanish responded in the way quality teams tend to do. This European side has been through ups and downs, overcoming them on every occasion in order to reach this contest with the Dutch. Vilda’s team has 45 more shot creating actions than any other side so far in this major tournament. Most of that has to do with the creativity, and flare of Spain in the final third of the pitch.
Patience, and unselfishness. That is all you need to know about Vilda’s team. Never once does the Spanish attack looked rushed when in and around the penalty area.
Switzerland came into the Round of 16 having conceded no goals. After 90 minutes, it ended up retrieving the ball out of the net five times. Similarly, the Netherlands are one of just four teams left in this competition with just one blemish of its defensive record.
It did not seem like a stable defense against South Africa, as the transition of the African side tested the Dutch to the limit at several points during that match. Manchester City’s Jill Roord has been quite impressive all World Cup long, completing over 87 percent of her passes while finding the back of the net four times.
This will be the first time that these two European foes go head to head at a Women’s World Cup. The Spanish has had the Netherlands number recently, taking down the Dutch in their last three meetings across all competitions.

Whoever may triumph from this fixture will play the winner of the Japan vs. Sweden quarterfinal. Spain has encountered the Japanese twice in the last 12 months including in the group stage of this tournament where the Asian outfit walloped the European side 4-0. Vilda’s side met with Sweden back in October on its home turf in a friendly, drawing 1-1.
The Dutch drew Peter Gerhardsson’s team last summer in the group stage of the Euros, and took down Japan in the knockouts of the last World Cup.
