5 coaches not named Sherrone Moore Michigan can hire to replace Jim Harbaugh

2. Matt Campbell has long been viewed as a strong potential outside hire
As with P.J. Fleck over in Minnesota, Matt Campbell at Iowa State has long been a candidate to get a bigger job in the midwestern footprint if he so chooses. Campbell may have benefited initially from coaching at MAC power Toledo with all of its resources, but he has certainly made the most of it in Ames for the better part of a decade now. Eventually, he is going to leave, but where could he end up?
I think Campbell would be a tremendous fit at a place like Michigan. His blue-collar ethos and lunchpail mentality will play well to both the players and the fanbase. From his time at Iowa State, everybody in the college football game knows who he is and what he is all about. As with Mark Stoops at Kentucky, Campbell can stay at his current place of employment for as long as he wants.
Because Campbell's name had been linked to NFL jobs only a few years ago, we have to wonder if he missed the boat to get a bigger and better job than what the traditional bottom-feeder in the Big 12 provides. Although that league is ripe for the picking at the top of it with Oklahoma and Texas leaving, just imagine what kind of powerhouse program Campbell could build with Michigan's great resources.
To me, Campbell feels more Penn State than he does Michigan, but that job is not opening up now.
