How many quarters are in football?
There are a total of four quarters in a game of football, be it the National Football League or college football. The rules are a little different when it comes to the high school game. While there are still a total of four quarters, they last only 12 minutes each. Be it the point-after kick (PAT) or a two-point conversion attempt, the clock does not run during these plays as well. There are different rules in terms of on-the field play. But most significantly, a game will continue with multiple overtime periods. And if no team scores, the game ends in a tie. That’s different from the postseason, where a winner must be determined.
Is football 2 halves or 4 quarters?
In essence, it is both. A football game has a first half and a second half. There is the first quarter and the second quarters followed by an intermission known as “halftime.” That’s followed by the third and fourth quarter. The difference is that quarters last just 12 minutes.

How does overtime work in college football?
The NCAA decided to finally adopt overtime for football games starting with the 1995-96 bowl season. Then with the start of the 1996 regular season, the NCAA began to utilize regular season overtime. There are numerous rules but the most important thing to keep in mind that the game will not end in a tie.
“The team that scores the most points during regulation and overtime wins the game. If the game is still tied after an overtime period, there will be another overtime period.” In 2021, the NCAA tweaked the OT rules. “Teams will be required to run a 2-point conversion play after a touchdown when a game reaches a second overtime period…If the reaches a third overtime, teams will run alternating 2-point plays, instead of starting another drive at the opponent’s 25-yard line. This is a change from the previous rule, which started to use 2-point plays in the fifth overtime period.”

And NFL teams can also have as many as 16 performers on their practice squad.
Then there’s another answer. On the playing field, there are 11 players – be it on offense, defense or special teams. Having more than 11 players on the field results in a penalty for “too many men on the field.” And the team is penalized five yards
During the offseason, training camp and the preseason, an NFL team can have no more than 90 players signed. That number will eventually be followed by the cut down process during the preseason. Once the season begins, every club team can have up to a 53-man active roster. On game day, a roster will have 48 players available – with a minimum of eight offensive linemen.

That is not the case in college as players are not paid to play.
As ScottFujita.com explains, there can be up to 125 active players on a college football team. The site also explains that active rosters vary from school to school. When does the clock stop in football?
When it comes to the professional game, there are clock stoppages on many occasions. After the opening kickoff, the clock stops as the offense and defenses take the field. There is also clock stoppage at the end of both the first and second halves at the “two minute warning.” The clock stops when a team scores a touchdown and the clock does not run when the team attempts either a PAT (via kick) or two-point conversion. Clock stoppage also occurs (obviously) during a time out, when a player runs out of bounds or for an injury. One big difference between the pro game opposed to both college and high school football is that the latter two instances have a brief clock stoppage after a team gains a first down so that those handling the sideline markers (“chain crew”) can get into position for the next play.
