As the 2014 NFL Draft approaches, the rumor mill becomes a swirling vortex of truth and ridiculousness, making for a lot of fun for everyone involved. The latest of those rumors involves the Detroit Lions, who could use one of their draft picks in an unlikely fashion.

The Lions have been rumored to be doing everything in this year’s draft, including trading up to get Sammy Watkins, taking a hard look at Jadeveon Clowney, and even trying to maneuver for Ha Ha Clinton-Dix.

Forget all that, the Lions are going to go out and get themselves…

A kicker?

Yes, according to a report from Tim Twentyman from DetroitLions.com, one of the priorities for the Lions is to get themselves a dependable kicker, even if that means using one of their draft picks.

Lions special teams coach John Bonamego talked to season ticket holders about the need to bring in a quality place-kicker:

"“The No. 1 thing we need to do is find a kicker. From a scouting standpoint, it’s our top priority in my department. We have two guys on the roster right now that both have some experience. We’ll evaluate those guys in this upcoming period and we’ll compare them to the guys that are coming up in the draft, the draft-eligible guys, and we’ll find one.”"

Ok, so maybe it’s not going to be first round priority for the Lions, but it’s clear that they are still looking to fill the void left by 21-year veteran Jason Hanson when he retired after the 2012 season.
