There has been speculation about the expansion of the NFL playoffs for a while now. To many, it is inevitable. However, according to ESPN’s Tom Carpenter, the vote on whether or not to expand from 12 to 14 teams could have taken place during meetings this week, and it never happened.

The owners instead opted not to do so, wanting to wait a bit longer to figure out the details “such as revenues, format and even workers’ compensation concerns.”

Carpenter notes that the next time the NFL owners could vote on this proposal would be October, but at that point any vote would be for the 2015 season, not for this coming season.

And Mike Florio of Profootballtalk.com is even skeptical of whether a vote would take place during October meetings, saying it might not happen until March of 2015.

Although the delay sounds questionable to fans who feel as though the change is going to happen one way or another, a push-back of the vote is only logical. There are a lot of moving parts and decisions that must be made to account for such a change. This is little consolation to the Arizona Cardinals and Pittsburgh Steelers, who would have made the playoffs this past season if the new rules were in place.

It will also be even harder to stomach by the two teams in 2014 who are in seventh place in each conference at the end of the year if the vote gets delayed until 2015. What then? If playoffs are going to be expanded, it should take place before more football is played.
