The Brewers want you to vote for Jonathan Lucroy instead of Yadier Molina for All-Star catcher, and to convince you they’ve released a parody political attack ad. Believe it or not, it’s actually kind of funny.

More from Milwaukee Brewers

It may not be Veep-level funny, but it’s pretty good. They nailed the voice-over – that combination of cheerfulness and gently persuasive urgency – and the generic background tune that sounds like the on-hold music you get when you call the devil’s office in hell.

And Lucroy saying “I’m Jonathan Lucroy and I approved this message” at the end. Sharp.

But now let’s do a little fact checking, shall we (in the spirit of the political ad bit)? Does Jonathan Lucroy really deserve to be the All-Star catcher over Yadier Molina?

Let’s look at the offensive numbers first:

Lucroy – .335/.379/.512 with 6 HR and 32 RBI.

Molina – .284/.333/.398 with 5 HR and 25 RBI.

Lucroy’s numbers are clearly superior overall, especially slugging percentage. That is a paltry SLG for Molina.

Of course Molina has made his name not as an offensive threat but a defensive superstar. So how do the two men stack up defensively? Just look at the dWAR.

dWAR: Lucroy 1.1; Molina 0.4

Woah. That number right there is the clincher. Lucroy has Molina by a wide margin in dWAR. He is better offensively and defensively right now. And it’s not really close.

Overall WAR? It’s 3.6 to 0.9 for Lucroy. I mean it’s over. Lucroy should be your All-Star catcher. Go out and vote for the Brewer. End the Molina regime. Embrace hope and change. Or whatever.
