The Atlanta Falcons have been reeling a bit since the loss of Pro Bowl caliber linebacker Sean Weatherspoon and have been looking at ways to replace him.

More from Atlanta Falcons

Once such idea would be to sign free agent Jonathan Vilma as the two parties have been linked together for a few weeks now, though little progress on any type of deal was made. That was, until today as Vilma was reportedly in Atlanta working out for the Falcons according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport.

Vilma is of course pretty familiar with the Falcons considering he’s spent a handful of years with NFC South rival, the New Orleans Saints though was cut earlier this offseason after he missed almost the entire 2013 season after suffering a knee injury.

When healthy, Vilma has proven himself to be a solid contributor though few know how the injury will impact him moving forward, especially given his age (he’s currently 32) which is why the Falcons have likely decided to give him a look.

Atlanta could look to go with internal options as well which include Paul Worrilow, Joplo Bartu, and Prince Shembo though it remains to be seen if they’re comfortable with any of them being thrust into the starting lineup.

Vilma has reportedly gauged the interest of both the Dallas Mavericks and Miami Dolphins this offseason, though, he hasn’t received much interest from either so he should come relatively cheap for the Atlanta Falcons, if that’s a move they decide to go forward with.

Frankly put, there aren’t a lot of better options available.
