Most experts believe Brian Hoyer is just keeping the seat warm for Johnny Manziel until the Browns’ QB-of-the-future is ready to take over. Nevertheless, the Browns continue to insist that Hoyer is the starter, and they are outwardly proceeding as though this is the case.

More from Cleveland Browns

As if to reinforce the Hoyer-is-the-starter point, the Browns reportedly are trying to sign the QB to a contract extension.

The 28-year-old Hoyer signed a two-year deal with Cleveland in 2013, and is set to make $1.25 million in 2014, the final year of that contract.

We will see what kind of deal the Browns and Hoyer ultimately strike (if indeed they are currently negotiating as reported). Our assumption has to be that the deal would not be particularly lucrative, given Hoyer’s uncertain starting status. Regardless of any public statements or actions by the Browns, everyone still knows that Manziel is going to be the starter sooner or later.

I suppose it’s always possible that the leak of the Hoyer negotiation is part of a ploy to get Johnny to pay attention. The Browns recently have shown signs of being fed up with Johnny’s off-field behavior, and floating the Hoyer story out there could be a way of sending him a message. That message being, “You better shape up son. You haven’t earned anything around here yet.”

Were I advising Johnny I would tell him not to sweat it. Cleveland isn’t going to give Brian Hoyer starting money. Hoyer isn’t going to be the starter. Johnny Football wasn’t brought to Cleveland so he could ride the pines.
