The Minnesota Timberwolves are starting to entertain the idea of adding some free agents this offseason as Shaun Livingston and others appear to be on their list of potential targets. But you can’t talk about the Wolves without first mentioning that everything they do is contingent on what happens with Kevin Love this summer.

More from Minnesota Timberwolves

Love has been rumored to be getting dealt this offseason but rampant trade speculation ahead of the draft proved to lead nowhere and Love remains with Minnesota for the time being. But while Flip Saunders would love to bring his All-Star forward back, Marc J. Spears reports that Minnesota remains focused on somehow acquiring Klay Thompson in a trade.

A Love for Thompson trade was discussed before the draft and thanks to there being no picks involved in those talks, the trade rumor remains alive and well as we press on into free agency.

If the Wolves could acquire a package that involves Thompson than that would likely be their best option but there’s no guarantee that’s what they’ll be able to pull off. There’s also a chance that Love decides to stay in Minnesota if the team gets it together this upcoming season and makes a playoff run, but as of right now it seems more realistic for the Wolves to acquire Thompson than it is to imagine them retaining Love after this year.
