Did Jason Kipnis really get schooled the other day by Derek Jeter or is this another case of the Jeter legend being bigger than the reality? According to Kipnis, it’s the latter.

More from Cleveland Guardians

Two days ago, Kipnis appeared to get deked out of his shorts by Jeter on a pop foul to Zealous Wheeler, resulting in a somewhat embarrassing double play. Though the world heaped praise on Jeter for his heady veteran fake out move, Kipnis insists his baserunning fail had nothing to do with Jeter’s acting skills.

Kipnis said via MLB.com:

"There was no deke. I get it. I’m as big a Derek Jeter fan as there is out there, but let’s not make up news."

So what did happen that caused Kipnis to get doubled off on a simple pop foul?

"I heard [third base coach Mike Sarbaugh] yell, “Go!.” I took a step toward third and then I heard the other half of his sentence, saying, “Go back!” So I had to touch second base again and started going back. By that time, it was way too late."

Kipnis claims he didn’t even notice Jeter’s deke until he saw it on video. Okay Kipnis. Whatever you need to tell yourself. Miscommunication with the third base coach? Sure. Let’s go with that. You didn’t get your man pants torn off by grandpa Jeter and replaced with boy pants.

Gotcha sweetie.
