The Detroit Lions have added a free agent running back to the roster, picking up former Patriot and Texan George Winn (per Aaron Wilson).

More from Detroit Lions

The 23-year-old Winn entered the NFL with the Texans in 2013 as a UDFA out of Cincinnati. The one-time Mel Kiper “top sleeper running back” was cut by the Texans in May of that year.

Winn was picked up by the Patriots in June of 2013 and appeared with them in the preseason, rushing for 59 yards and a TD. That wasn’t enough to earn a spot on the Patriots and the team cut him before the start of the season.

He spent the entire 2013 campaign out of the league. Detroit is now giving him a look as a camp running back, but he’ll have an uphill battle to crack the roster. The Lions have three solid pro backs in Reggie Bush, Joique Bell and Mikel Leshoure already on the squad.

Winn is presumably there to take some of the beating in practice while the Lions save their main guys for the season. Maybe Winn can make the practice squad if things fall his way. At the very least, he gets some meals out of it. Not a bad deal, if you don’t mind getting your head beaten in.
