One of the biggest questions surrounding the Cleveland Browns as they enter the preseason is whether it will be Brian Hoyer or Johnny Manziel that will become the starting quarterback when the team begins their regular season.

More from Cleveland Browns

While it will be an open competition between the two signal-callers with seemingly neither quarterback holding an edge, Browns head coach Mike Pettine did state that the team should have a starter by the time they take the field for their penultimate preseason game.

“I don’t know if I’ll set a date and kind of paint ourselves into a date, but it will be sooner than the third preseason game,” Pettine told Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal.

That means we should know whether it will be Hoyer or Manziel as QB1 of the Browns before their August 23 preseason meeting with the St. Louis Rams.

Pettine’s timing makes perfect sense, with teams generally allowing their starters to see the most playing time in their third preseason outing.

The Browns-Rams preseason game will feature two of the most discussed rookies in the league in Manziel and Michael Sam.
