Ever since the Cleveland Browns selected Johnny Manziel in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft, there has been plenty of discussion about whether it will be Manziel or veteran Brian Hoyer who leads the team’s offense out on to the field for the season-opener.

More from Cleveland Browns

The Browns have worked hard to make sure Manziel knows that he is just another rookie an that nothing would be given to him.

Manziel would need to work hard if he wanted to earn the starting role, but it appears that he really has his work cut out for him thanks to a strong lead in the race for Hoyer.

If you ask the Browns players who will be named the starting quarterback, Hoyer is the name you will hear out of their mouth.

From ESPN’s Adam Schefter:

Browns head coach Mike Pettine had previously said he would name a starter before the third preseason game, but as Schefter indicates that appears to be a decision that will come even sooner.

When the team takes the field for their first preseason game, we will see just how much of a gap their is between Hoyer and Manziel’s control of the offense. We would expect that gap to be significant.
