Sammy Watkins didn’t get to play much in the preseason opener for the Buffalo Bills. After just two short series, the Bills turned to the second team and called it a night for Watkins before the rookie could get his hands on the football. For the team’s next game, Watkins is hoping that will change.

More from Buffalo Bills

“I can’t wait to get back out there,” Watkins said per Jay Skurski of The Buffalo News. “Hopefully we play a little longer. It’s up to the coaches, but we need to get back on the same page and have great practices and come out and be prepared Friday.”

“I can’t wait until I catch a ball and get hit,” Watkins added.

He certainly seems to have the mentality of an NFL receiver, even if he doesn’t have an NFL reception yet. Watkins was targeted three times by quarterback EJ Manuel, but was unable to get to any of the passes. “Going against a great corner (Prince Amukamara), he kind of widened me,” Watkins said. “I’ve got to get a better release.”

The learning curve is steep for rookie wide receivers and it would be imprudent to expect a monster first season from Watkins. That said, his attitude, by all accounts, seems to be in the right place. Now the team is hoping that Watkins can combine that approach with his physical gifts to give the Bills some big plays in 2014.
