Are you one of the many who upgraded to Windows 8 or 8.1 and immediately regretted the decision, but didn’t want to downgrade back to Windows 7 after spending a large chunk of change for Windows 8? Well, you may be in luck.

According to a report by ZDnet, Microsoft plans to offer a pre-release version of the next major Windows operating system as a public download in the fall of 2014. That’s right, this fall.

Mary Jo Foley claims that the release, currently known as “Threshold”, will be released in late September or early October. It doesn’t have an official name just yet, but it’s expected to be called Windows 9.

The released software will be a beta of the upcoming operating system, which means it will likely include a variety of bugs and missing features that will be fixed by the time the OS hits a full release.

The preview of Threshold will be public and open to all interested parties, which contrasts what Microsoft has done in the past with Windows 7 and 8. The pre-release versions of those pieces of software were only available to developers.

With a tech preview of the OS coming so soon, many are now speculating that the full release of the operating system could come some time in early 2015, which is nearly a year ahead of what many believed to be the original launch date of late 2015/early 2016.
