If you aren’t unveiling a new jersey or helmet every year, your school is falling behind in the ever-increasing college football marketing race. We’ve seen multi-colored helmets, state flag inspired helmets and completely crazy uniform combinations just to name a few of the new things we’ve seen over the last few years.

On Saturday night the Minnesota Gophers unveiled their addition to the arms race, as they will use an alternative helmet for some games this upcoming season.

The Gophers made a change to the look of its regular helmet a few years ago, going from the sparkling maroon helmet to a matte look, now they’ve gone back to the sparkling look with the “gold” helmet. Additionally, the famous school chant, “ski-u-mah” is written in the stripe on the helmet.

Don’t ask us why they are calling what is clearly yellow, a gold helmet, but at least it will be a stark contrast to the all-maroon look the Gophers could otherwise put out on the field.

This addition also gives the Gophers at least four more uniform combinations to show off. Not only does Minnesota have the all-maroon look, it also ha a gold pant—which goes well with the maroon top but could theoretically be used with the white away top as well.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see the Gophers use this look for its trophy games with Michigan, Iowa and Wisconsin either. Those will clearly be the three biggest games for Minnesota this season.
