Hilliard suffered a Lisfranc injury in his right foot during Monday night’s game against the New York Giants. The right tackle was filling in for starter LaAdrian Waddle, who was himself taken out of the same game with an injury to his right calf.
After the game, Hilliard thought he had only suffered a twisted ankle, but the diagnosis turned out to be far worse.
To replace Hilliard, the Lions have signed Garrett Reynolds, who was one of their final cuts during preseason.
A sixth-round pick out of Oklahoma State in 2007, Hilliard had stints with the Patriots, Colts and Browns before landing a job with Detroit in 2009.
Hilliard has been a valuable backup lineman for Detroit over the last six years, and their depth will take a severe hit now that he’s been placed on IR.
The Lions are still waiting to hear about the status of LaAdrian Waddle, so there’s a chance they could go into their game this weekend against the Panthers with Garrett Reynolds starting at right tackle.
Obviously, that would not be ideal for Detroit.
The Lions may have won their opener against the Giants Monday night, but they lost two right tackles plus cornerback Bill Bentley to injury in the process.
A pretty costly victory by any measure. Nothing ever seems to go perfectly right for the Lions, does it?
