Nebraska Cornhuskers running back Ameer Abdullah was a preseason Heisman Trophy frontrunner, and that means the athletic department throwing a full campaign behind their star running back.

We now know the tact they are taking, as Joe Schad tweeted out a picture of the “Powering Nebraska Football” literature and gifts being presented to Heisman Trophy voters.

A Heisman campaign is nothing new, especially in the age of social media but I don’t remember anyone handing out Husker-themed batteries in any of the previous years.

The Huskers’ running back has also gotten off to a good start to the 2014 season. He’s rushed for 395 yards on 57 carries with three touchdowns, with his rushing total putting him 10th in the country in rushing yards.

Abdullah is more than just a straight running back though, as he’s also been productive in the passing game with four catches for 105 yards and a touchdown.

Heisman campaigns are often built around memorable moments and game changing plays, which is something Abdullah produced for Nebraska in Week 2 of the season. With his Huskers trailing FCS foe McNeese State in the final seconds, Abdullah got a pass from Tommy Armstrong and did some amazing work to get the game-winning touchdown:

Abdullah came in to the season as the leading returning rusher in college football and the leader in career all-purpose yards. With Nebraska being one of just two undefeated teams in the Big Ten, he could elevate his candidacy even more as the season goes on.

It’s very early on in the season, but it’s also hard not to recognize the talent and big play ability that can help a running back win the trophy for the first time since Mark Ingram won it in 2009.
