University of Michigan Athletic Director Dave Brandon issued a statement shortly before 1 a.m. EST in which the Michigan Wolverines apologized for allowing sophomore quarterback Shane Morris to remain in last Saturday’s game after suffering a concussion. Brandon said the team needs to improve communications between the medical staff and the sidelines.

Morris suffered a helmet-to-helmet hit in the fourth quarter against Minnesota this weekend and remained in the game for one play before he was sidelined. However, he returned to the game again despite not having been cleared by the Michigan medical staff.
Both Michigan Head Coach Brady Hoke and offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier claimed to have not been watching Morris when he was hit, and Hoke said Morris told him he was stumbling due to an unrelated ankle injury, not the “probable mild concussion” Morris actually had.
“Shane left the bench when he heard his name called and went back into the game,” Brandon said in his statement. “Under these circumstances, a player should not be allowed to re-enter the game before being cleared by the team physician. This clearly identifies the need for improvements in our sideline and communications processes.”
Michigan plans to keep a medical expert in the press box to help relay injury protocols to the sidelines, and would look for ways for the training and coaching staffs to be on the same page during games.
