The Kansas City Royals have had a 29-year playoff drought, so it’s pretty easy to forgive their fans and the city of Kansas City for getting so jazzed up about the Royals playoff run. The Royals swept the Los Angeles Angels in the ALDS and will face the Baltimore Orioles in the American League Championship Series, with a trip to the World Series on the line.
Now, a street in Kansas City has been renamed by city council to honor the Royals — and provide a playful jab at their ALCS opponents, the Orioles. The street was originally called “Baltimore Avenue,” and perhaps city council was hoping to avoid any awful sportswriter jokes of the Orioles “moving in to Baltimore Avenue” if the Royals were to falter. Or, perhaps Kansas City is just really happy to finally have a reason to cheer for the exciting Royals, who had long been irrelevant in MLB, prior to this season.
Regardless of reason or silliness, it’s still cool to see the city of Kansas City get so into the MLB playoff experience, and perhaps the Royals can keep exciting the city to a championship.
