Rafael Nadal withdrew from the Paris Masters, as the world’s third-ranked men’s tennis player is battling appendicitis while currently participating in the Swiss Indoors this week.

Nadal will play Borna Coric of Croatia in Friday’s quarterfinals and will make a decision on whether to have surgery to treat his appendicitis following the conclusion of the tournament, but it is likely he will opt for a more aggressive treatment with antibotics. It’s the latest in what has been an injury-plagued stretch for Nadal, who missed three months with a wrist injury following a fourth round defeat at Wimbeldon. He returned to action at the China Open earlier this month, where he lost in the quarterfinals to Martin Klizan.

Despite the injuries, Nadal has captured four tournaments this year, including his ninth French Open title in the last 10 years. He has also won the Qatar ExxonMobil Open, the Rio Open 500 and the Matua Madrid Open in his native Spain.

The loss of Nadal at the Paris Masters was compounded by the withdraw of U.S. Open champion Marin Cilic, who is contending with an injury to his right arm. Ernests Gulbis also will not participate in the tourney due to a right shoulder injury.

Replacing the three at the Paris Masters, which begins on Monday, will be Pablo Andujar of Spain, Poland’s Jerry Janowicz and Vasek Pospisil of Canada.
