As Max Scherzer mulls where he will sign in MLB free agency, the Texas Rangers could loom as a team with the motivation and resources to land him.
It’s been fun praising the duo of aces in Detroit that has been Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander, but if this rumor ever played out, we might see Scherzer as part of an even more frightening duo.

Imagine Scherzer paired with Yu Darvish at the top of the Texas rotation. That’s the kind of move that would make the Rangers scary as soon as the deal was done.
Nick Cafardo suggests that the Rangers could be one team that is in position to sign Scherzer. He notes that the Rangers have the money and have not made a splashy move as of yet this off-season. To date it seems that Texas’s focus has been on the lineup, specifically on adding a right-handed bat. But with the options on that front drying up in a hurry, perhaps the Rangers could turn to Scherzer.
If one thing has become clear over the last handful of seasons, it’s that the Rangers are not afraid to pull the trigger on big moves to contend immediately. So even if they have not been linked much to Scherzer as of yet this off-season, it would fit their M.O. if they ended up being the team to make a run at this winter’s biggest prize in free agency.
