New York Jets to pursue RB C.J. Spiller?

The New York Jets could use some help at the running back position, and Rich Cimini believes that former Buffalo Bills running back C.J. Spiller would be a perfect fit.

C.J. Spiller is one of the top free agents on the market at the running back position heading into the 2015 offseason and there are plenty of teams in need of signing another talented running back. The problem with Spiller throughout his career, has been how prone he is to injury. That could very well be a factor in where he ends up this offseason.

The New York Jets are one of the teams that could use some help at running back and ESPN’s Rich Cimini seems to think that Spiller would be an ideal fit for them.

During the 2014 season with the Bills, Spiller ended up playing in just nine regular season games. He carried the football 78 times for 300 yards on the year with no touchdowns. Spiller did catch 19 passes for 125 yards and a touchdown as well.

Needless to say, his numbers last year are going to greatly impact the type of money that he will get this coming offseason. If the Jets were to offer him a reasonable contract as a backup, they would probably get him at a very cheap deal. There is no question that Spiller still has “star” potential, but he simply hasn’t been able to stay on the field enough to show it.

New York hired a new offensive coordinator in Chan Gailey, who was the coordinator in Buffalo during Spiller’s best season. That in and of itself would likely attract Spiller to the Jets and also makes it more likely that the Jets would have interest in an often-injured running back.

At 27 years of age, Spiller still has plenty of time to get his career back on track. If he can stay healthy and on the field, he is more than capable of being a 1,000-yard rusher each and every season. New York tried an experiment with former Tennessee Titans star running back Chris Johnson this past season, but it ended up failing miserably.

They certainly aren’t scared of taking risks on players that others view as washed up, and that could be the case once again this offseason. It would be the definition of a low-cost, potential high reward type of signing.

Expect to see the Jets show interest in Spiller this offseason, but it will all depend on what type of money he decides to ask for.
