Jimbo Fisher: Tampa Bay Buccaneers have asked about Jameis Winston
By Cory Buck
Florida State Seminoles head coach Jimbo Fisher confirmed that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have inquired with the coaching staff about quarterback Jameis Winston.
Early reports from the NFL Combine indicate that Florida State Seminoles quarterback Jameis Winston has a serious head up on his competition for being the top quarterback selected in the upcoming draft in May. So it should come as no surprise that the team holding the first overall pick in said draft is already inquiring with Winston’s coaches as part of their due diligence in the process.

Seminoles coach Jimbo Fisher confirmed as much on NFL Network’s ‘NFL AM’, saying the Tampa Bay Buccaneers “have contacted different people on our staff.” He didn’t have as much to say about other pro teams contacting his staff. In fact, he noted that traffic has been light in that regard.
“Not as many as you’d think right now. It’s just now starting, and our pro day’s in another month (March 31). I think in this month, we’ll get bombarded. But we’ve got quite a few (prospects).”
March will be a busy month for Winston and the rest of his fellow Seminoles preparing for the NFL Draft. While Winston has proven his physical prowess at the Combine, it is the personal interviews that will likely prove the biggest test in his mission to be selected by Tampa or someone else with the first overall pick.
That’s largely because Winston has a history of off-field incidents that have prevented him from being the slam dunk first overall prospect some feel he deserves to be. To that, Fisher also had a response.
“Jameis’ problem, if you really research and really get down to the nuts and bolts of what actually went wrong — with him standing on the table and the crab leg incident — when you walk out of a place with a deputy sheriff beside you, it was not intent,” Fisher said. “It was a mental lapse. What Jameis does, which is very unique and a lot of people follow him — he was just being a normal student. He was trying to do what the other kids around him were [doing], and it was very immature”
Sure, boys will be boys and such. Except Jameis Winston has to prove he’s no longer a boy. If the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are going to trust Winston with the keys to their franchise, they need to know he’s not going to drive them into a ditch. That’s why you can expect March and April to be big months for Winston, among other Seminole pro prospects.
