Arizona Cardinals rookie WR Damond Powell shot in drive-by
Arizona Cardinals rookie wide receiver Damond Powell was wounded in a drive-by shooting at his home in Ohio Friday night.
Damond Powell Jr. should be less than a week away from heading to his first NFL training camp with the Arizona Cardinals. The former Iowa Hawkeyes wide receiver was signed by Arizona in early May as an undrafted free agent. Instead of reporting to camp, he’s got something much more dire to deal with.
Powell was wounded in a drive-by shooting at his home in Toledo, OH on Friday night according to Toledo News Now. According to reports, Powell and his friends were sitting in their driveway when three masked men in a gold car fired shots from their vehicle. One of the shots hit Powell in the face. He was then taken to the hospital.
If there’s any good news from this horrific incident, it’s that Police are saying that Powell’s injuries do not appear to be life-threatening at this time. There’s little knowledge beyond that regarding his well being at this point, but him reportedly looking like he will survive is certainly comforting.
As far as the shooters in the incident, no arrests have been made as of Saturday afternoon. The little information that they have is from shell casings recovered from the scene of the shooting and the tip that it was a gold vehicle from which the shots were fired.
In the wake of the shooting, the Cardinals released this statement on their website:
"We are aware that Damond Powell was the victim of a shooting last night in Toledo, where he remains hospitalized. We have been in communication with his family to offer whatever support and resources we can provide. We will continue to monitor and provide updates as appropriate."
That statement from the team shows just how little information has been released thus far as the team seemingly knows just as much as everyone else about the shooting and Powell’s condition. However, their statement comfortingly re-affirms that his injuries aren’t life-threatening.
Powell, who caught 19 passes for 317 yards last season at Iowa, had a long road ahead of him to begin with to make the Cardinals roster considering the team’s depth at the position. Now, hope for a full and speedy recovery is the most important thing to be concerned with. Even as a rookie who hadn’t yet made it to training camp, you’d expect he has a team and a league supporting him as he recovers.
