The Texas Longhorns will open their 2015 college football season in South Bend by taking on a Notre Dame Fighting Irish team boasts national championship aspirations. As the Longhorns look to rebound from last season’s 6-7 campaign by knocking off a giant to start this year, they would likely enjoy having all of the good mojo that they can get.
However, they’re going to be missing a big part of their program on September 5. According to reports, Notre Dame won’t allow Bevo XIV, Texas’ 2,000-pound living Longhorn who attends the majority of their games, into the stadium.
Other Texas mascots will still be allowed to attend, just not their most iconic one.
While a policy against live mascots is somewhat understandable, this leaves the deck stacked even more in Notre Dame’s favor. They already had the talent advantage, but now Texas won’t have their good luck charm. For the Longhorns, hopefully Bevo XIV being there in spirit, as he said he would be, will curry enough favor with the football gods to pull off the upset.
Kickoff for Texas and Notre Dame is slated for 7:30 p.m. ET, with the game being broadcast on NBC.
