A look at some of the action that took place on Friday night between the Seahawks and Chiefs in the NFL preseason
In NFL preseason action on Friday night, the Seattle Seahawks traveled to the hostile confines of Arrowhead Stadium to take on the Kansas City Chiefs. When all was said and done, the defending NFC champs came away with a loss, as the Chiefs took this one 14-13.
After neither team getting on the scoreboard in the first quarter, the Chiefs struck first in the second with an Alex Smith touchdown pass to Jeremy Maclin (more on this in a bit). Following a Seahawks field goal, the nice night that Alex Smith was having came to an abrupt end, as Bobby Wagner picked him off and returned it to the house to give Seattle the 10-7 lead at the half.
In the third quarter, Chase Daniel kept up his impressive performance from last week, throwing yet another touchdown pass. The Seahawks would add another field goal, but that’s all they would be able to get against the Chiefs.
Three Stars of the Game
1) Jeremy Maclin
Rejoice, Chiefs fans! All you had to hear about from everyone this off-season was how not one of your wide receivers caught a touchdown pass last season. Well, on Friday night, we saw that Jeremy Maclin will have no problem breaking that trend mightily this year.
With just under 10 minutes to go in the second quarter, Maclin hauled in a three-yard score from Alex Smith, which had to have the fans in Arrowhead and Chiefs fans everywhere smiling. Now, all he has to do is get one in the regular season, which he’s pretty much guaranteed to do a few times.
Also, aside from the scoring strike, Maclin was out there running some crisp routes and we saw some flashes of what he and Smith could do together. Maclin finished with three catches for 22 yards.
2) Bobby Wagner
Of course, given the big play, Wagner gets to be anointed as one of the stars. The Chiefs offense wasn’t dominating in the first half by any means, but they were moving the ball at times against this vaunted Seattle defense. With the first half coming to a close, though, Wagner put the stops to that with his 25-yard interception return for a score off of Alex Smith.
3) Travis Lockett
After quite the impressive showing on special teams last week, the rookie from Kansas State got a little more work on Friday night. Heck, we even saw him with the wide receivers on the Seahawks first team at times, which is more than a good sign. He finished his night as the leading receiver for the Seahawks with three catches for 42 yards. He also returned one kickoff for 19 yards and two punts for 20.
This kid continues to show that he might be a contributor to this contender when the regular season rolls around.
Injuries
The big injury to keep an eye on in this one was Chiefs outside linebacker Dee Ford going down. In the first half of this one on a pass rush, Ford was hit pretty hard in the ribs by Seahawks running back Christine Michael and he had to exit the game.
Ford’s latest update is that he suffered a rib injury.
Odds
Coming into this one on Friday night, the Chiefs were a 3.5 point favorite, so people that bet on Kansas City are probably not too happy at the moment.
Next week
For the Chiefs, they’ll welcome in the Tennessee Titans next week, while the Seahawks will take their 2-0 preseason record on the road to face the San Diego Chargers.
