Former NFL defensive end Greg Hardy is again making news for the wrong reasons, and his explanation for something attached to his recent arrest is flimsy at best.

Nearly a month into the 2016 NFL season, Greg Hardy remains unemployed. So his weekends are open, and this past Sunday night he was arrested in Richardson, Texas for possession of a controlled substance. TMZ Sports has updated the story with Hardy being charged with felony possession of cocaine, which was found during a search of Hardy’s vehicle after he was stopped for not using a turn signal.

According to multiple reports, Hardy told officers he didn’t know what the substance was and that someone must have stashed it when he passed his wallet around at a party the night before. (Apparently Hardy was footing the bill for everyone at said party, and therefore did not have full control over his wallet? I guess?)

Hardy was reportedly arraigned Monday morning, and posted $5,000 bond soon after. His story about how the cocaine wound up in his wallet will surely be put to a credibility test before a judge. Hardy’s past lack of self-awareness and accountability is a solid reference point though, even if it’s totally unrelated to this recent incident.

Hardy sat out most of the 2014 season on the heels of a domestic violence incident. The charges were ultimately dropped when his former girlfriend refused to cooperate and could not be found, which reeks of a pay-off from Hardy with a promise to disappear. ESPN’s Adam Schefter interviewed Hardy last spring, with less than hard-hitting questions, and Hardy still avoided taking full responsibility for his actions as he toed the line of blaming his alleged victim.

Hardy had a workout with the Jacksonville Jaguars in July, with some rumored initial interest from the Washington Redskins around that time. But there has been no known interest from any NFL teams since then, and this past weekend’s arrest won’t be bringing any suitors to the forefront. If there was any doubt before, Hardy’s football career seems to be done.
