Cleveland Indians asking for fan feeback on Chief Wahoo logo
By Bryan Rose
There are a lot of iconic logo’s in Major League Baseball, one of which is the ‘Chief Wahoo’ used by the Cleveland Indians. The logo has been associated with the franchise since the 1940’s (some might say even longer), though has taken on a new/realized look every so often but seemingly grew in popularity thanks to the Major League movie franchise.
However, the Indians, along with a handful of other professional sports franchises like the Atlanta Braves, Washington Redskins and even NCAA schools like the San Diego State Aztecs, have come under fire in the past for the years for using offensive mascots, logos or chants.
Fully aware of the potential backlash, the Indians have started asking for fan feedback in regards to their primary logo through e-mailed fan surveys:
"According to a tweet from Twitter user @CleFan4Ever, the Cleveland Indians are looking for feedback on their Chief Wahoo logo, which has gone largely unaltered since the early 1950s — and was perhaps even more offensive before that."
The survey isn’t completely about the Indians’ logo as it covers a handful of topics, though the team is clearly attempting to gauge perception on the logo, at least from a local standpoint.
The Indians have used an alternative logo since 2002, a scripted ‘I’ along and introduced a scripted ‘C’ in 2008 to pay homage to the franchises history, though according to the team they have no current interest in changing or altering the primary Chief Wahoo logo.
