There was a belief that the San Francisco 49ers may release wide receiver Jonathan Baldwin this offseason, but that appears unlikely as Baldwin and San Francisco agreed to rework his contract.
The veteran wideout was to make $1.4 million dollars during the 2014 season but that figure will be reduced considerably, all the way down to $645,000 after the two sides agreed on the new deal.
"Source: 49ers WR Jon Baldwin has reworked his contract. Base salary in 2014 is now $645k (down from $1.4M). $755 available in incentives."
Given the new contract, it’s not expected Baldwin will be released during the offseason as he’ll likely provide cheap insurance if for some reason San Francisco is unable to re-sign Anquan Boldin.
San Francisco has made it a priority to re-sign Boldin and is said to be looking at drafting a wide receiver in the upcoming 2014 NFL Draft, so Baldwin isn’t expected to stick around for more than this season.
He would likely battle for the second receiver spot if San Francisco was unable to retain Boldin.
