When Brandon LaFell signed with the New England Patriots last week, it left the Carolina Panthers with a devastating hole at wide receiver.

He also left with a small and subtle parting shot, though, that may not have been his intention.

LaFell says he signed with the Patriots because he wanted to play for a Hall of Fame quarterback in Tom Brady, suggesting that Cam Newton ‘isn’t there yet’.

"“Because I had a chance to play with a Hall of Fame quarterback. One day Cam will be there probably but he’s not there now”"

There’s really nothing false about LaFell’s statement as Newton’s more of a Pro Bowl caliber signal caller than a Hall of Fame talent like Brady. LaFell didn’t many any suggestions that Newton won’t be able to reach such status, so it doesn’t appear there was any foul intent on the part of LaFell but rather just an odd sounding statement.

LaFell stated he first thought of signing with the Patriots when Carolina was scouting for their 2013 matchup.
