There wasn’t a huge market for free agent quarterback Luke McCown, but the Detroit Tigers were said to have interest in the former fourth overall pick in the 2004 NFL Draft.

But the Lions, looking to replace backup signal caller Shaun Hill won’t have the luxury of bringing up McCown as he decided to re-up with the New Orleans Saints on Wednesday afternoon.

"Congrats to Veteran QB Luke McCown agreeing to a 1 year contract with the @Saints"

McCown, who will backup Drew Brees, isn’t likely to see the field barring a major injury considering he’s only thrown one NFL pass since 2011, though does give the Saints a veteran presence familiar with their offense in the case of a catastrophic injury to Brees.

In addition to backup quarterback duties, McCown also served as the primary holder for kicker Garrett Hartley, so his return will give some stability to the kicking game – though that’s not exactly a difficult position to replace.

The Saints had also signed McCown in 2012 but quickly released him before re-signing him the following year in 2013.
