Baseball is a cruel sport. A sport in which offensively, you fail 70 percent of the time and you’re thought among the elite in the game.

That’s a realization that hit David Ortiz hard on Tuesday night, just hours after he had clubbed what proved to be a game winning three-run home run against the Atlanta Braves.
With Braves starter Ervin Santana on the ropes Monday afternoon, Ortiz launched a three-run bomb into the left-center seats that helped Boston come back from a hefty deficit to defeat Atlanta.
But come Tuesday night, things were different for Ortiz who had a chance to make an offensive impact but ended up hitting into a routine ground out.
Understandably frustrated, Ortiz channeled his inner Bo Jackson and snapped his bat into two pieces.
Running up the line, bat in hand, Ortiz watched as he was thrown out and in frustration took his bat and swung it into the ground, smacking the turf and dirt in the process.
Still needing to get more frustration out, Ortiz then decided to smash the bat into pieces as it cracked atop his thigh.

No, he didn’t go for the Jackson-esque broken bat over the batting helmet, but it was still rather impressive regardless.
I’m not sure the Red Sox were huge fans considering the potential injury risk nor is Ortiz after he woke up to what was likely a gnarly bruise on Wednesday morning.
