The Kansas City Chiefs didn’t make any sort of splash in free agency this year, but they managed to lose plenty of players to the open market and the inability to find proper money to re-sign them. The cash-strapped Chiefs must now think about the long term effect their current payroll will have and may not be done slashing from the budget.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

One player we were all keeping an eye on as a trade candidate this offseason was cornerback Brandon Flowers, who’s massive contract is a stone weighing down the Chiefs. He’s not guaranteed to be cut, but  if the Chiefs do decide to move on from him and make him a post-June 1 cut, then they could save as much as $14 million over the next two seasons.

The big question is will the Chiefs be better off with Flowers in their secondary or with over $14.5 million off the books?

That’s what the front office in Kansas City needs to be asking itself as a decision needs to be made one way or another on Flowers and there are benefits to both keeping his talents around or freeing up his salary for some cap space breathing room. It won’t be an easy decision but we’ve seen veterans cut late in the offseason before and it’s not like the Chiefs don’t have over 14 million reasons to be in favor of moving on.
