Milwaukee Brewers’ Aramis Ramirez nearing return

According to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, third baseman Aramis Ramirez should return to game action within the next week or so. He has been on the disabled list since May 12 with a strained left hamstring.

The last two steps for Ramirez to return were taking ground balls in pregame workouts and running the bases. He has accomplished step one and all that remains is running the bases. The Brewers would also like the veteran to grab a few at-bats in minor league rehab games before returning to the big club.

More from Milwaukee Brewers

Ramirez will be a welcome return for Milwaukee, who has seen its big division lead dwindled down to just 1.5 games by the St. Louis Cardinals. The Brewers are losers of six of their past 10 ballgames and have come back to earth a bit after a scalding start to the season.

While Ramirez wasn’t hitting the cover off the ball the first month of the season, the 16-year pro will immediately be inserted back into the Brewers’ lineup and defense at third base.

With an OPS of just .699 thus far in 2014, Ramirez will hope to get back to his hitting ways of last season and 2012. While he was pretty good last year, finishing with a slash line of .283/.370/.461, he played in just 92 games, accumulating 304 total at-bats.

2012, his first year as a Brewer, is what fans are hoping Aramis resembles the rest of this season. In 2012, Ramirez netted 5.4 wins above replacement with a .900 OPS, his first season with an OPS of at least .900 since 2009, the middle of his Chicago Cubs run.
