The Minnesota Timberwolves hired Flip Saunders as the team’s new head coach on Thursday and that has proven to be a move that many fans are not too pleased about. Besides labeling him a control freak who botched the head coaching search so he could assume the role, fans are not too confident that the Wolves will be able to grow under Saunders watch.

More from Minnesota Timberwolves

Fans thinking this aren’t all entirely wrong as the very purpose of Saunders taking up the position as head coach is to merely keep the team from not having one at all. In other words, it’s not a long-term gig.

As pointed out by Steve Aschburner of NBA.com, Saunders isn’t planning on being the long-term head coach of the Timberwolves and is only planning on being the temporary head coach until one can either be groomed or found next year.

"As candidates came and went, it became increasingly clear that the Wolves needed a transitory coach for their transitory situation. Reports online Thursday had Saunders assembling a staff that could include his eventual replacement, with Maccabi Tel Aviv coach David Blatt, a coaching star on the international scene, and former NBA Coach of the Year Sam Mitchell (another back-to-the-future former Wolf) mentioned prominently. There was also talk, however, of Saunders’ son Ryan, now on Randy Wittman‘s staff in Washington, reuniting with his pop in the Twin Cities."

This isn’t all that bad of a thing, as Saunders knows the team and knows the organization well enough to be able to keep it afloat. What this won’t do is please Kevin Love or even come close to convincing him to stay, no matter what the Wolves are trying to feed fans.
