Riders take on a park built to replicate elements they’d find in any “street” or urban environment, like stairs and railings. They’re judged on degree of difficulty, variety, height, distance, and execution of tricks, as well as continuity of run, originality, style and use of the entire course.
Ryan Sheckler had the highest score of the elimination heats, but struggled in Round One. Riding last in the round he knew what score he had to beat to make it into the finals sitting near the bottom of the standings. He had a big run with a little mess up at the end but put up an 85.00 to edge his way into the finals barely, knocking off Curren Caples and his 84.66 score.
Unfortunately for Sheckler that meant he rode first in the finals, opposed to Round One when he rode last and was aware of the circumstances needed to advance. That also meant he was in back to back rides finishing Round One and opening the finals and put up a 83.00 in his first run of three in the final.
Alex Majerus, who had the second highest score in Round One, had a rough first run in the final. He lost his board climbing the quarter-pipe and fell while exiting a rail slide in the final seconds of his run. Majerus still got an 85.66 moving him into first place.
Nyjah Huston came in as a heavy favorite after winning three skateboard street gold medals in 2013. Huston didn’t disappoint in his first run scoring an 89.33 and taking over first place after one run.
Sheckler, Chas Ortiz and Torey Pudwill all had disappointing runs and low scores in their second runs.
Luan Oliveira, who had the worst first run in the finals and was sitting in sixth, came up big in his second run with an 87.66 moving all the way into second place.
Huston might have felt the pressure, and came up big in his second run scoring a 95.00 and solidifying his hold on first place and giving him the two highest runs of the finals at that point.
Sheckler fell during his final run eliminating himself from the podium. Chas Ortiz didn’t improve his score and Pudwill fell during his final run as well. That guaranteed tha the final three riders, Oliveira, Majerus and Huston would medal, just a matter of where.
Oliveira was in second but fell during his final run and failed to improve his score. That brought up Majerus with a chance to steal silver or gold, sitting in the bronze medal position when his run started. Majerus couldn’t improve his score giving Huston the gold medal and setting up a victory lap in his final run.
The three finished where they started Huston in first followed by Oliveira with silver and Majerus with bronze.
