The No. 1 overall recruit in the 247Sports Composite Rankings has released his top five schools and the Alabama Crimson Tide is growing on defensive tackle Trent Thompson (Albany, Ga. Westover) according to Dawgs247’s Jake Rowe.

The in-state Georgia Bulldogs have been believed to be well out in front for the five-star recruit who stands 6-4 and weighs 292 pounds with the Auburn Tigers lurking in the distance as the runner-up, but now Alabama is firmly in place as his No. 3 team with the defending national champion Florida State Seminoles at No. 4 and their ACC rival Clemson Tigers in the fifth spot.

Alabama had previously been outside of the top four schools with the aforementioned schools representing his top four, but there will still be more shuffling as the summer wears on and Thompson visits these schools and weighs all his options.

Thompson has previously visited each of the schools in his top five, including multiple trips to all but Clemson. Thompson will be in Athens this week on either Thursday or Friday when Georgia hosts a 7-on-7 tournament.

I still believe Thompson will be a Georgia Bulldog when he decided to shut down his recruitment, which could be on National Signing Day or it could be prior to the start of his senior season, but the progress Alabama has made in recent weeks is something to definitely keep an eye on moving forward.

Thompson recorded 83 tackles and 12 sacks last season as a junior and has 17 sacks over his last two prep seasons.
