Scooter Gennett and Josh Rutledge are good deep league adds

Welcome back to “Off The Deep End”, where I will give you fantasy baseball tips on who to pick up in deeper leagues. For people who play standard leagues, drop/add columns are easy for you to find, but for those of you that love deeper leagues, advice can be harder to come by. That is where I can help. All of these players are available in 85% or more of ESPN leagues.

This time around we will do things a little differently.  I will only do one position at a time, but I will give you advice on who to drop as well.

This piece will focus on the second basemen.

Add:

Scooter Gennett, Brewers: He in still on the right side of the platoon at second base.  Gennett is hitting .400 over the last two weeks with a homer and a steal.  He will still lose at-bats against left handed pitching, but with that kind of production, who can complain?  You just have to check the opposing pitcher each day.

Josh Rutledge, Rockies: How long will the Rockies keep throwing D.J. LeMahieu out there at second base when Rutledge is hitting like he is?  How about a .448 average in June.  Rutledge may also get some games at third base while Arenado is out as well, but I am guessing that second will be his long term home.  The Rockies can’t really afford to keep his bat out of the lineup right now.

Rougned Odor, Rangers: Odor seems to have found his groove a little bit.  He is hitting .361 with two homers and six RBI in the last two weeks.  With Jurickson Profar’s rehab going slowly or not at all, Odor will get all the at bats he can handle.  And if he is hitting like this, you should be plugging him in as well.

Drop:

Mike Aviles, Indians: I am a big fan of position eligibility, but when the mentioned player isn’t playing well or often, it becomes a moot point.  Such is the case with Aviles.  He is just 2-20 in the last two weeks with six DNP’s.  He can, and should, be dropped everywhere.

D.J. LeMahieu, Rockies: He is mired in a bad slump, hitting just .156 over the last two weeks.  Though it hasn’t really happened yet, I expect the red-hot Josh Rutledge to take a big chunk of his at bats.  LeMahieu doesn’t have much value even when he does play fantasy wise, so he can be dropped.

Brian Roberts, Yankees: Roberts is cold again, hitting just .194 with three RBI in the last two weeks.  His two home runs and four steals on the season aren’t doing much for you either.  You are better off streaming hot hitters than rolling with Roberts, hoping he comes around.
