The Detroit Pistons are finally free from the salary cap hell bestowed upon them by former general manager Joe Dumars, but that doesn’t mean they’re in a rush to spend all of it on one player. In fact, it’s the complete opposite as newly minted head coach Stan Van Gundy suggested that it’s unlikely the Pistons make a big splash in free agency this Summer.

More from Detroit Pistons

The biggest free agent signing the Pistons may make this offseason is their own as big man Greg Monroe is a restricted free agent and is likely to draw significant interest around the league. Detroit however, namely Van Gundy, has been adament about their desire to keep Monroe in Motown despite reports that he was on the trading block during last February’s deadline.

Monroe is likely to command upwards of a maximum contract deal, so he won’t be cheap, but given his restricted status the Pistons will have every opportunity to match any contract offer he receives.

As for the remainder of the offseason, Van Gundy suggested the Detroit Pistons are more likely to spread out their money rather than give it to a single player, this according to Keith Langlois.

That’s likely the best move possible considering the Detroit Pistons and their fans are well aware of how a couple big, bad contracts can cripple a once proud franchise. Add in that they’re fresh off the Josh Smith signing, Pistons fans are likely more than happy to hear the change in free agent strategy for this coming offseason.
