Philadelphia 76ers will not use Ben Franklin logo
By Bryan Rose
On Monday afternoon, news leaked suggesting that the Philadelphia 76ers would be incorporating a new, secondary logo for the 2014-15 season. That logo featured American ‘icon’ Benjamin Franklin, dressed in a 76ers shooting shirt, dribbling the ball in a mildly aggressive way.

It was a bit of a unique looking logo and it certainly made waves on social media, but just a day after the rumors broke, it appears the logo will not be used after all.
According to Jason Wolf, the Philadelphia 76ers explored using the logo (so it was real) but the team, for whatever reason, decided to scrap the idea.
Given the amount of understandable backlash teams have received for logos in recent years, it’s possible the Sixers simply didn’t want to put themselves in a poor position, even if it was only Ben Franklin. The logo also didn’t get the highest of regards on social media so it’s possible it may have been ‘released’ simply to judge fan input which wasn’t all that positive.
We’ve seen teams attempt to move away from the ‘cartoon’ look so the addition of the Ben Franklin logo would have backtracked on that idea, though I don’t think it’s all that bad for a secondary logo. It fits with the Philadelphia 76ers theme and it’s never something we would have seen on the uniform outside of a possible patch at most.
Regardless, it’s apparently no longer an option and will be put into the archives of the 76ers history, at least for the time being.
